Bird Keeper Red?

I'm wondering if I ought to change my name to Bird Keeper Red.  It seems like I seem to attract Pidgey's everywhere I go.

Let me back up, cause it's been a couple days since I last checked in with the blog.  Because someone (*cough, cough, me) forgot to charge his laptop at the Pokemon Center before leaving Pewter City.  Whoops?.

But my team travelled through Route 3 - pretty successfully I might add!  There were several trainers who talked about having to come through the Mt. Moon area.  And after checking out the town map I got from Blue's sister, it appears that Mt. Moon will be up next on my trip.

Route 3 was a lot longer than I expected it to be.  Good thing I got camping supplies and picked up more food before I left Pewter City, even though I did forget to charge the laptop.  (When will I let myself get over that?)

Charmander, Beedrill, Pidgey, Nidoran, and I had some really great Pokemon battles with some of the other kids hanging out around the Route too.  And we even found a couple of older hikers who were willing to give us a challenge.  I don't think they were really expecting my team and I to be really great at this Pokemon battling thing.

Our biggest challenge was this woman who sent out a Clefairy.  The Clefairy kept singing at Charmander, which made him fall asleep.  And then it had a vicious slapping attack.  I really thought poor Charmander might have had it.  So I pulled him out and sent in Nidoran.  Even though Clefairy tried to Sing Nidoran to sleep, Nidoran shook it off and actually showed a new attack, a Poison Sting.  Clefairy finally caved after that.  I couldn't figure out why the woman kept flirting with me during the battle though.  That was weird.

After that battle though, I decided to set up camp for the night.  When Charmander woke up from his nap, we cooked dinner and then played a little bit before bed.

Next day we found the first wild Pokemon we saw on Route 3.  And guess what it was?

That's right (if you remember from the beginning of the blog)! A Pidgey.  Which, in case you've been keeping up with the math, makes the third wild Pidgey I've encountered on 3 different routes.

And because I'm not one to cheat or no longer play by the rules, I caught it.  The way Beedrill and I fought in tandem was enough to convince Pidgey I was a worthy trainer, so it allowed itself to be caught.

Not long after we encountered the Pidgey, we found a pretty steep path that led to the Pokemon Center right outside the tunnel through Mt. Moon.

After letting my Pokemon rest, I plugged in the laptop and decided to put Pidgey in the PC.  I don't need to have more than one of them with me.  And who knows what I might find in Mt. Moon!

As you can tell, the laptop finally turned on.  So after signing off here, I might go play with Charmander, Nidoran, Pidgey, and Beedrill some more.  I don't want to be stuck in the middle of Mt. Moon after dark.  I've heard that it only takes a few hours to get through and then you're pretty much in Cerulean City, so I'll just do that tomorrow.

But before I go, I should mention two things of note.  One, some guy tried to sell me a fish Pokemon.  It was tempted, but I remembered the rules of the bet, no buying Pokemon.  So I didn't buy it.

And then, I saw a sign warning folks about this group called Team Rocket that was hanging out in the caves trying to steal Pokemon fossils.  I better be extra careful so none of my team gets snagged by them.

Brock and Roll

This morning was really cool.  I managed to explore Pewter City a little bit, and even checked out the museum again.  I know I'm 17 and all, but I still think that Kabutops fossil is killer.  I wonder if anyone will ever be able to bring Kabutops back to life?  I hope so.  That would be great!

The space exhibit was really cool too.  I met this old woman who said she bought a color TV just to watch the first lunar landing.  But I thought that it was only broadcast in black and white?  I don't know.  Maybe I'll write to my grandpa to find out if he remembers it.  Mom and dad were way too young to remember.

And I got to see an example of what appears to be a Moon Stone.  I wonder if my journey is going to take me by Mt. Moon?  It could be really neat to get a couple Moon Stones for myself. Although I don't really know what they do, but they look really cool.

I think Pidgey, Beedrill, Nidoran, Charmander, and I are going to spend some time training together later on this morning.  And we might even head over to the Pewter City Gym.  I've heard that to be a real Pokemon Trainer you have to make it past Brock first.  I've also heard that fire is at a serious disadvantage when it comes to dealing with Brock's rock type Pokemon.  Which sucks, cause Charmander is my best friend and I really wanted him to be able to win this battle for me.

-----------------------

I don't really know what I expected when I entered the Pokemon Gym for the first time, but Pewter City's gym was not it.

Maybe I expected something more like my school's gymnasium where everything is fakely bright, and smells like bleach and cleaning supplies.  But I was definitely not treated to that when I stepped through the double doors of Brock's gym.

Instead, I found myself in a darkly lit large room.  Surrounded by different kinds of boulders and stalactites and stalagmites.  I definitely could smell the musty, damp smell that seems to accompany earthy caves.  But I couldn't even see Brock when I first entered the gym.  Instead, there was some weird maze-type thing that I had to navigate first.  Charmander might not be good at fighting rock type Pokemon, but he does have a good light source for spelunking!
I saw someone standing in the dark, who I thought was Brock, but when I approached, he told me that he wasn't Brock and that I wasn't even close to be able to challenge Brock.  He sent out a Diglet and a Sandshrew, but Pidgey was able to distract them with Sand-Attack and actually managed to beat them with its Gust attacks.  Pidgey also showed me during the fight that it knew how to temporarily boost its speed to perform a quick attack.  How cool is that?

Finally, after continuing our way through the maze, I found a large platform with someone standing around nearby.  Turns out that person was actually Brock.  He seemed to think it was weird that I was challenging him without any grass or water type Pokemon, but he was willing to accept my challenge in the end.

Pidgey and Beedrill were able to easily take down his Geodude.  They used Sand-Attack to distract him, and when nothing that Geodude was doing, Beedrill came out and used its brand new Fury Attack to chip away at Geodude's rock hard defenses.

Brock's second Pokemon, Onyx, was a littlle trickier.  I tried the same technique of blinding Onyx with Pidgey's Sand Attack, which worked out really great, but Beedrill's Fury Attack couldn't chip away enough at Onyx's defenses before it caved and got really tired.  So I tried using Nidoran's Horn Attack, which seemed to be more effective.  After learning that Onyx could absorb damage for two turns and then deal it back out, I started to keep an eye on when Onyx prepped to use that move, switching to Nidoran's defense lowering Leer to keep damage at a minimum.

It seemed to take all afternoon, but I finally defeated Onyx and won the Boulder Badge from Brock.  He also passed on TM 34, which would teach one of my Pokemon Bide too.  I think I'm going to wait and see which Pokemon can take the most damage before I teach them that move though.

Tonight, my team and I will have a good dinner and then we'll start our journey to Cerulean City tomorrow.  Oh, and I guess I better check in with mom, dad, and Professor Oak tonight too - just in case they aren't reading this blog.

The Path Less Traveled

This forest is huge!

Seriously though, I feel like I've been in here for days.

Ok, so maybe I've gotten lost a couple of times, but I swear I've passed the same set of trees like six or seven times already.

Maybe I just need to admit that I have no idea where I am and ask for help.  But then again, that would require finding someone nearby who can help me.  I haven't seen a single soul except for the guy hanging out waiting for his friends.  He said his friends really wanted to catch some Bug-type Pokemon, but he was really afraid of bugs, so he was just going to wait for them here.  If I remember, he did seem to say that his friends really liked battling their Pokemon.  Maybe I'll be able to get a battle and ask for directions at the same time?

Oh.  Maybe I should also clarify, I really have only been in the forest for a few hours.  It's just seemed like days because I've gotten lost so often.

A bright spot, the first Pokemon I came across during my foray into the forest was a Kakuna.  It looked really wicked, but it wasn't until after I managed to catch it using Pidgey and Nidoran that I found out this Kakuna can't really do anything except Harden its shell.

Stupid bet with Blue.  Stupid bug Pokemon.

My Pokedex did say that Kakuna is in the process of evolving, so maybe it'll turn into something useful?

-----------------------------

So I managed to find a couple of that guy's friends.  And find my way deeper into the forest.  Turns out, it's not that hard to navigate, you just have to make sure you follow the well worn path instead of going off on your own.

Go figure.

Charmander was really helpful when trying to fight these bug type Pokemon trainers though.  His Ember attack really tore through their string shots.  And Nidoran easily took down the Weedles, even with their Poison Sting attacks.

I've been trying to get Kakuna to do that poison sting, since it turns out that Kakuna is the evolved form of Weedle, but to no avail.  I guess I'll keep trying.
-----------------------------

Kakuna evolved!  And I found my way out of the forest.  But first things first.  Kakuna evolved!
That's right, my own little poison bug Pokemon finally came out of its cocoon and became a Beedrill!

And what's the first thing my Beedrill did?

That's right.  It used Harden.  Super frustrating, I know.  But I'm going to try and keep working with it to see if it can perform any other attacks.

It wasn't long after Beedrill evolved that we made it to Pewter City at last.  And it's safe to say that the bonds I've forged with Nidoran and Charmander are stronger than ever.  Although, I feel like I've neglected my Pidgey over the past several hours, so maybe the two of us will spend some time together after dinner.

Pewter City seems to be pretty small.  I can see the museum that our class went to when I was in 8th grade.  I wonder if they still have that Kabutops fossil?  Maybe I'll go check it out tomorrow.

I can't seem to find the Pokemon gym though.  Guess it's on the outskirts of town?  I'll explore that too.  I've heard that Brock is the only serious trainer around.  And I've also heard that he's the one to distribute the BoulderBadge.

Although my Pokemon and I are a strong team, I'm not sure I'm quite up to facing a gym leader yet.  I want to keep growing and training first.

Battle of the Blue (Rematch)

This morning I set off down Route 22 to see the Pokemon League.  However, I didn't get too far down the road before Blue showed up.

I know it's only been a couple of days, but Blue seems to have changed even more than the last time I saw him.  There's something...intriguing about him.  Something I can't quite wrap my mind around yet.  And there's...I don't know...maybe it's those eyes?

Oh...sorry, got distracted for a minute.  Right, so Blue showed up and up and challenged Charmander and I to a Pokemon battle.  It turns out that he has managed to catch a Pidgey too, and it looks like he's put in some serious work in trying to make it more powerful.  In the middle of our battle, Charmander decided that it trusted me enough to show me a really powerful Ember attack.  And poor Pidgey, even though it tried to Gust away Charmander was no match for the vicious Ember.  It was burned to a crisp in no time.

I feel a little bad though.  Cause it looks like Pidgey wasn't going to make it.  I'm sorry Blue.

But then Blue sent out his Squirtle.  One hit from the Squirtle showed me Charmander's fire couldn't quite stand up to the water Pokemon moves.  So I sent out my new Nidoran instead.  Even though those Bubbles slowed Nidoran down a little, Nidoran also showed me a really cool Horn Attack after Leering at Squirtle a couple of times.  My little Nidoran's Horn Attack managed to pierce Squirtle's hard defenses and Blue conceded defeat.

After complaining about that I was cheating by having three Pokemon while he only had two - even after I showed him my Pokedex about how all of the Pokemon I've obtained were allowed to be mine by the rules of the bet, Blue took off.

As he was leaving, he muttered something about heading north to Pewter City, saying that his Squirtle shouldn't have any problems with Brock's Rock type Pokemon and that he'd have his first Pokemon League badge before me.

I think my Pokemon companions and I will still try and head over to the Pokemon League though and see what all the fuss is about.

------------------------------

Turns out, you can't actually enter the Pokemon League unless you have these things called badges.  The guard told me that he wasn't allowed to let me pass unless I could show him the BoulderBadge.

I wonder if that's what Blue was talking about when he left earlier?

Well, I guess I'll have to head back to Viridian City and then plan my next steps after lunch.  I'm glad that I was able to get an early start this morning, so that even my battle with Blue didn't slow me down too much.  I should be able to grab a bite to eat and then grab some camping gear and food before taking off again.

After looking at the town map, it looks like I should be able to make it to Viridian Forest by dark.

------------------------------

So I made it to Viridian Forest.  It didn't take any time at all for me to make it back to Viridian City, and I was able to get all of my adventure shopping done while hanging out at the Pokemon Center waiting for Charmander, Pidgey, and Nidoran to rest up.

Our little gang then worked our way to Route 2.  I found another Pidgey not long after we set off, and abiding by the rules of our bet, captured it with relative ease.  I figured it couldn't hurt to have another Pokemon on my team, even if it meant I had two of the same kind, right?

However, after making a quick call to Professor Oak, it turns out that I could send on my second Pidgey to a PC system run by someone who knows a lot about Pokemon.  I decided that I'd send Pidgey number two there, just in case I found a really cool Pokemon in the forest.  Plus, I don't want both Pidgeys to get hurt and unable to fight at the same time.

Not long after that, I found the entrance to the forest and decided to set up camp in a nice little clearing I found.  Charmander, Pidgey, Nidoran and I wanted to play a little bit before we made dinner together.  Charmander's Ember ability was quite helpful when setting up camp.

Looks like we'll start making our way through the forest tomorrow.  The town map Blue's sister gave me isn't really helpful for things like this forest, so I hope I don't get lost.

Pewter City, and Brock, here we come!

My (Second) Very First Pokemon

Well, Charmander and I made it back to Viridian City.  And we actually got there with very little problems.  In fact, we didn't encounter a single Pokemon.  A far cry from our first trip up to the big city.

We skipped the Pokemon center because it only took us about an hour to get up here and headed into the PokeMart instead.  Alex was still working there.  I hope the poor guy got to have a little break since I was in there yesterday afternoon!  After catching up with him and showing off my Charmander (poor guy, his local gym leader has been missing, so they've had to depend on this old man in the area to give them Pokemon, and he just got a Weedle!) I got to to make my first Pokemon trainer purchase - about a dozen PokeBalls!

It was a good thing dad had me set aside some money to save up for this day, otherwise I would have been in trouble.  Dad, if you're reading this, thanks!

I guess Charmander and I will go hang out near Route 1 and hope we find a Pokemon?  I'd hate for Blue to show me up before we've even really gotten started!

-----------------------------------

I did it!

I got to catch my first Pokemon, instead of being given one.  It was a Pidgey!  Apparently this is a bird Pokemon and is actually quite common.  But I don't care, it's always going to be a little special because I managed to catch it...well, Charmander and I caught it together.

It was really cool, Pidgey and Charmander went back and forth, Pidgey returning Charmander's scratches with gusts of its own.  But after a few rounds, Pidgey looked like it needed a brief break, so I threw the PokeBall.  And I guess it was tired or maybe it respected the way Charmander and I fought together, so it didn't resist hardly at all.

I think the three of us will head back into the Pokemon Center for a quick rest and then I want to spend some time playing around with Pidgey this afternoon.  I heard that the Pokemon League runs to the west of Viridian City, so I think the three of us will head that way after lunch.

-----------------------------------

Pidgey and Charmander are turning out to be quite the dynamic duo.  The two are really getting along and seem to be a great tag-team.  It turned out that after lunch I was too excited to even take a nap, so the three of us spent the hottest part of the day playing around the Pokemon Center.  Pidgey warmed up to me really quickly and after playing around for a little bit, it even showed me a move I hadn't seen before Sand Attack.  I tried to get Charmander to do it too, but he didn't seem to quite catch the hang of it.  Oh well.

When the sun started to go down, I took off towards the Pokemon League, but I had hardly taken two or three steps out of town when a Nidoran jumped out at me.  I found out later that it was the male version of the Pokemon, but not until after Pidgey and I weakened it enough that I could capture it.

Although, it did take me quite a while to capture the Nidoran, I was quite pleased that at the end of today I had caught not only one, but two Pokemon.  And I didn't break any of the rules that Blue and I had laid out for our bet.

Unfortunately, after catching Nidoran, the sun was almost completely past the horizon and I could hear my stomach rumbling.  Since I was in such a hurry to buy PokeBalls, I completely forgot to buy anything for dinner.  I guess my little party of four will troop back to the Pokemon Center for dinner and maybe we'll even score a nice bed for the night.

Our trip to the Pokemon League will just have to wait until morning.  And I'll have to be better prepared for adventuring too!

My Adventure Has a Purpose...And A Bet

I finally made it to Viridian City.  It seemed like it took forever to get up there.  I mean, I've only been there for school and some trips to the store with mom, but we usually use the bus or mom flies us there on her Pidgeot.  But I've never had to walk up there by myself.

I didn't realize how many  Pokemon lived between these two cities.  I mean, it's only a couple miles, but it seemed like I saw a hundred Pidgeys and Rattatas on my journey.  Fortunately my Charmander was more than a match for them.

Charmander and I have gotten really close over the past day.  It seems like every time we battle together, our moves flow a little bit more seamlessly.  I can really tell that we're going to be good friends.  Plus, I think he's really cool looking.  I love the flame that comes out on the tip of his tail.  Each time I send him out of the Pokeball, it seems like that fire burns a little bit brighter.

Once we got to Viridian City, I decided to check out the Pokemon Center.  The nice lady working at the front desk took Charmander for a little bit and healed him up to be good as new.  It was great to see how friendly she was to both of us.  I can tell she's really passionate about healing Pokemon.  It actually reminded me of dad a little bit - he's always working so hard to save lives as a doctor at the hospital in Cerulean City.  I'm hoping that I'll be able to visit him there someday.

Someone at the Pokemon Center told me that I should go to the PokeMart though.  They said that's the only place where I can buy Pokeballs to capture Pokemon on my own.  And seeing as how there's a grumpy old man who won't let anyone through to go to the forest, I guess I will.

-----------------------------------

That was weird.  I walked into the PokeMart and Alex from school was working there.  I didn't know he lived near Viridian City.

But as soon as I walked in the door, he wouldn't let my buy anything.  He said something about how an important piece of mail was delivered here instead of Pallet, and asked if I would mind to run home and give it to Professor Oak.

He was really adamant that I take it, so I did.  I decided to hurry home.  Plus I really wanted to check in on mom to see how she was doing without both of her guys there.  I mean, she has her Pidgeot and a couple other Pokemon, but still.  They're not quite the same as her husband and her only son.

I did have some fun jumping down the small cliffs that mark a lot of the roads around Kanto.  Turns out they're just high enough that you can't really walk over them, but also not too high that you won't get hurt if you jump down from them.  I got to Pallet in almost record time.  My trip seemed to take next to know time.  I'm excited to see how everyone has been doing.  I know I haven't been gone for more than a couple of hours, but I feel like Charmander and I have already grown up a lot since we've been gone.

-----------------------------------

Turns out that important piece of mail was something that Professor Oak has been waiting on for a long time.  He said he's been waiting for it, so he could finish up his newest invention.  A new version of the Pokedex!
He was about to tell me more about it when Blue showed up and interrupted him.  It seems like he has grown a lot too, but not in the same way that Charmander and I have.  Blue seemed to be even more arrogant than he was just this morning.

And...did he get his hair cut?  Also, when did he start to get so...oh...right!  Professor Oak and the new Pokedex.

Professor Oak said that this Pokedex actually gives us more information if we are able to catch the Pokemon.  And that this Pokedex actually links directly to his computer at home and is able to record all sorts of new information about the Pokemon after we catch them.
He then went on to talk about how his dream was to write up a compendium of all the different Kanto Pokemon to be distributed around the world.  He hoped that the two of us would help him in the journey.  I think it's going to be a great thing to have a great work dedicated to helping all the people of the world see what makes Kanto special, so I eagerly agreed to help him out.  Blue seemed to be a little antagonistic about the whole thing though.  Typical.

But as we were leaving, Blue turned to me and said, "I bet you can't become the Pokemon League Champion."
"I bet I could.  I always did better in school than you, why should Pokemon be any different?" (I really don't know a whole lot about Pokemon, but I couldn't stand to see Blue act like such a jerk.)

"Oh yeah?  Then let's make this bet even more interesting Red.  I bet that I can be the Pokemon Champion before you, and I'll only use the first Pokemon I encounter in each new route and town to do it.  Bet you can't do that!"

"I'm sure I can Blue.  Challenge accepted!" (I really don't know what this means.)

So we settled on a couple of ground rules before we went our separate ways.

1. We can only use the first Pokemon to appear in each route, cave, river.
2. Rare candies and other vitamins will be fair game.  (I have no idea what this means.)
3. If anyone gives us a gift Pokemon, we are able to use that and it will not count as a Pokemon from that city or route.
4. No buying Pokemon!
5. No trading Pokemon.

Then Blue took off. Pretty abruptly too.  I wonder if he's been practicing that all afternoon?

I went to say goodbye to his sister and she handed me a town map.  I always did like her, but for some reason she always insists on flirting with me.  I don't get it.  I've always been closer to Blue than her, but whatever.  I'm grateful to have a little extra help on this journey.

And then I went to say goodbye to mom, cause I don't know how long it's going to take me to get back home after I take off.  She was really supportive of the whole thing and listened patiently while I told her about Blue and how much he's changed.  She told me that I didn't need to worry about Blue and that I should keep raising Charmander the way I was, to not worry about being the strongest, but to travel and learn and grow from our time together.  Mom reminded me that's how she and dad met, while they were traveling around on their Pokemon journeys, and mom was impressed by how dad and his Charmeleon were able to show how much they truly cared for each other - that's how she fell in love with him.

Mom was also really insistent that I didn't leave right then and there.  She told me to take write a letter to dad explaining my new adventure and telling him about all the cool things that happened to me today.  She also gathered a bunch of paper and some pens so that I could write home to both of them while I was on my journey.  And then, like mom always does, she told me to go rest while she made dinner and that I should start on my journey officially tomorrow.

And even though I'm 17, I never could say no to mom's home cooked meals. So I guess I'll set off back to Viridian City tomorrow and then see about going to the Pokemon League?

Starting My Adventure

It's my birthday!  Happy birthday me!

And to celebrate, my mom decided to get me my very own laptop computer.  She said that it came from her and dad, even though he had to be at work before I woke up this morning.  She also said that it would be very useful for me, because today is the day I get to start going on my very own trip around Kanto, to learn what it means to become a Pokemon trainer today.

Ever since they raised the age of kids who were able to get their very first Pokemon from their local professor/gym leader to 17, I've been waiting.  Of course, they would do that to me on the eve of my tenth birthday, when the age used to be.

But that doesn't matter now!  The day is here.  And even though dad couldn't be here, I can't wait.

I know, I'll start by seeing what Blue is up to.  Although, he's been kind of a prick lately.  I wonder what's gotten into him?

-----------------------------------

That was weird.  Blue wasn't home.  It was just his sister.  She said something about going to the Pokemon lab to wait for their grandpa?

I'm not that late to wake up, am I?

Really though, what has gotten into Blue.  We used to be such good friends.  He and I were born on the same day, and we had been really close ever since we got home from the hospital.  We used to dream about getting our very own Pokemon one day.  I was going to get a Charmander like my Dad.  And he said he was going to get a Bulbasaur, because he and his mom spent so much time gardening together.

But then, about a couple of years ago, he stopped hanging out with me.  He started being disrespectful to his parents and grandparents.  He started staying out late after school.

I was really hoping that when we started our Pokemon journeys together today that things would be different than they were; that they would go back to the way they used to be.

-----------------------------------

Of course, that hope was promptly shattered a few minutes ago, when it was time for us to pick out our Pokemon.

Let me back up for a second.

I went down to the lab to find Blue and Professor Oak, but only Blue was there.  He was really impatient, like he forgot what today was supposed to be all about.

After watching him sulk and glare at me for a few minutes, I asked one of the professor's aids where the Professor might be, and they said he had gone off to do some field work.

Well...you know ADHD me, I couldn't wait any longer.  So I ran out to find him, but just as I stepped into the long grass, Professor Oak stopped me.

He told me that I should know better than to try wandering in the tall grass without my Pokemon.  Of course, he wouldn't listen when I tried to explain that I was looking for him and that I had been waiting.  He just had me follow him back to the lab and gave Blue and I the same speech that he's given us for a long time now.

Finally, the moment came when I got to pick out my Pokemon.  Of course I chose Charmander.  It was only the companion that I had been dreaming about for years.  But then Blue did something I completely did not expect.

He picked up a Squirtle.  What?

That's not Bulbasaur.  I guess I was wrong about how this Pokemon journey was going to bring us back together.

And to further drive the point home, just as we were about to leave the lab, Blue challenged me to a Pokemon battle.

I wasn't quite ready for that, because he didn't seem to care about meeting our new companions, but rather just seeing how strong his Squirtle turned out to be.  Charmander and I managed to beat him though, thankfully I had grabbed the potion my dad had given me on my 10th birthday on my way out the door this morning.  Charmander was a good battler, but Squirtle managed to get a couple of good hits in before it fainted.

Blue took off, muttering something about the Pokemon League.  I guess I'll head north to Viridian City and find out?
